► (1890-1976) Realizador cinematográfico alemán, de tendencia expresionista. Dirigió: Metrópolis (1926) y El testamento del doctor Mabuse (1933), entre otras.

Director de cine estadounidense de origen austríaco. Estudió arquitectura en Viena y después prestó servicios al ejército austríaco en la primera guerra mundial. Convaleciente de las heridas de guerra, comenzó a escribir guiones y posteriormente encontró trabajo en un estudio cinematográfico en Berlín, donde más tarde dirigió exitosas películas como Las tres luces (1921), El Dr. Mabuse (1922), los dos capítulos cinematográficos de Los nibelungos (1924), la expresionista Metrópolis (1926) y M, el vampiro de Dusseldorff (1931). Después de realizar la película antinazi El testamento del Dr. Mabuse (1933), abandonó Alemania con rumbo a París, para luego instalarse en Hollywood. Entre sus películas estadounidenses se cuentan, Furia (1936), Sólo se vive una vez (1937), El ministerio del miedo (1944), Encubridora (1952) y Los sobornados (1953), que están a la altura de sus obras alemanas en intensidad, pesimismo y dominio del sentido visual. Gran parte de su trabajo aborda el destino y la inevitable necesidad de autodeterminación.
